Wrestling: Glenelg High Wins County Tournament, Followed By River Hill, Wilde Lake

Individually, Nathan Kraisser of Centennial High won his third county championship, and the junior now seeks his third regional and state championships.

Nathan Kraisser is two weeks away from a triple three-peat and a perfect season.

The Centennial High junior took home his third Howard County championship Saturday night at Oakland Mills High School, ripping through the 125-pound division with two pins and a pair of technical falls.

Kraisser (34-0) can collect his third regional title next weekend at Wilde Lake, and make it three state crowns in a row if he can run the table the following weekend at the University of Maryland’s Cole Field House.

“I felt good out there,” said Kraisser, who won the championship with his second technical fall of the season over Mount Hebron senior standout Drew Vickers, 17-1. “I’m a little sore – some jammed fingers. I thought I did well. I came out ready to wrestle and didn’t take anyone lightly.”

Glenelg, which went 3-0 in the finals and had 10 top four finishers, took the tournament title with 226 points. The Gladiators were followed by River Hill (197.5) and Wilde Lake (192). , with three seconds, a third and two fourths, was sixth with 149 points. Centennial (101.5) took eighth with two thirds and a fourth to go with Kraisser’s title.

Kraisser  pinned Segun Seweje of Oakland Mills at 1:33 and Phillip Frazier of Atholton at 2:29 before routing River Hill’s Ryan Blum in the semis, 18-1.

The Kraisser-Vickers final matched wrestlers with a combined 230 victories, but the underclassman again proved to be too swift and technically superior.

Mount Hebron head coach Todd DeCrispino said, “Vickers is a great wrestler, and Kraisser is just . . .you’re probably seeing one of the best wrestlers that Maryland has ever seen. He’s on a different level. Drew is at 121 wins. To come out and tech (technical fall) someone like that in the finals match -- and twice -- that just goes to show you how good of a wrestler he is.”

“He (Kraisser) just keeps getting better and better every time he goes out there,” said Centennial head coach Dave Roogow.

Kraisser improved to 109-3 for his career and Vickers is now 121-39. They could meet twice more before the season is over.

Wilde Lake’s Alvin Harris won the outstanding wrestler award, getting the most dramatic win of the night by scoring a takedown with five seconds left in the final at 171 pounds to beat unbeaten defending state champ Mark Colabucci of Reservoir, 7-5.

In a battle of junior defending state champs, Tony Farace of Oakland Mills moved to 35-0 with an 8-1 decision over Wilde Lake’s Alex Polonsky (25-6).
