Wrestling: Centennial's Kraisser, Oakland Mills' Farace Three-Peat

Both wrestlers end their junior seasons with state titles, 41-0 records

COLLEGE PARK – Nathan Kraisser might allow himself a day off after completing a perfect season Saturday night, and then it’s back to the mat.

The Centennial High junior captured his third state title at Cole Field House at the University of Maryland, defeating Magruder state champ Parke Overmiller in the 4A/3A final at 125 pounds, 11-3.

Kraisser finished the season at 41-0, and moved a huge step closer to joining four other Maryland public school wrestlers who have won four state championships. He’ll take a career record of 116-3 and a 63-match winning streak into his senior season.

But Kraisser will be quite busy before then, starting with the FloNationals April 1-3 in Ohio.

“Maybe I’ll take Sunday off and then get back into it,” he said.

Kraisser certainly deserves a break after a season in which he won his third straight triple crown (Howard County, region, state) and avenged two of his career losses with a 3-1 victory over Dom Malone of Wyoming Seminary in the Mount Madness Tournament.

“Phenomenal year – 41-0,” said Centennial head coach Dave Roogow. “He’s been waiting to have an undefeated season….It was a great tournament for him, and Overmiller wrestled a great match. It was closer than the score.”

Howard County had four other state champions.

Oakland Mills junior Tony Farace also positioned himself for a prized fourth title, getting a three-peat by defeating freshman Brendan Colbert of North Hagerstown in the 2A/1A final at 112 pounds, 4-0. Farace also finished 41-0.

Reservoir senior Mark Colabucci (171) repeated in 4A/3A, beating Mike Meekins of Stephen Decatur, 11-5. Colabucci, who won at 145 last year, finished 81-1 in his last two seasons.

Seniors Zathy Ndiang (189, 4A/3A) of Wilde Lake and Charles Walls (160, 2A/1A) of Glenelg scored late takedowns to get their first titles. Ndiang (29-1) defeated Anthony Zoscak of North Point, 4-3,  and Walls (26-2) edged unbeaten David Volz of Joppatowne, 3-2.

Reservoir sophomore Seth Rowell (130) and Glenelg senior David Pruett (171) both suffered lopsided losses in the finals. Rowell lost to unbeaten junior Tyler Goodwin of Arundel, 16-0, and Pruett fell to once-beaten Bubba Scheffel of Southern-Garrett, 17-4.

LaPlata of Charles County won the 4A/3A team championship, and Winters Mill of Carroll County took the 2A/1A title.

Kraisser, whose other state titles came at 103 and 112 pounds,  got a 46-second pin in the first round and then routed his other three opponents by a combined score of 48-8.  In the final against Overmiller, who took a 33-1 record into the match, Kraisser pulled away after leading only 3-2 early in the second period. He nearly had Overmiller pinned early in the final period.

“Parke’s really tough,” said Kraisser. “He pushed me the whole time.  I knew it was going to be a battle. I decided to keep going, doing what was working for me and improve on that.”

Overmiller, who won the state title at 119 last year, was upbeat despite losing and suffering a black eye and a bruised and scraped forehead in the final.

“I knew coming into it I was going to have to pull a few things out of my sleeve,” Overmiller said. “He’s like a whole head taller than me, but he’s real technical. He’s got a lot of counters….I just went out there and wrestled as smart as I could, and he came out on top. But still, I had a good time.

“He’s going to be a four-time state champion.”

Mt. Hebron senior Jon Iwaskiw (189) finished fifth, avenging a second-round loss by fall to Huntingtown junior Steven Athens with a 6-4 decision in the rematch.
