River Hill's Brenton to Play Pro Basketball in Japan

Brenton's college coach said, "he exemplifies everything we hope to develop in a student-athlete."

Tommy Brenton, a River Hill High School graduate who led the Hawks to their first ever state basketball championship in 2007, will play professional basketball in Japan.

Brenton signed a contract with Link Tochighi Brex, a team located about 80 miles outside of Tokyo, according to his college team, the Stony Brook University Seawolves.

Earlier this year Brenton was named the 2013 Lefty Driesell National Defensive Player of the Year in the NCAA for his play with the Seawolves.

Brenton holds Seawolves Division 1 records in rebounds (1,115), steals (220) and assists (405), according to the University.

"Tommy made an impact on the Stony Brook men's basketball program like no other student-athlete," said Seawolves Coach Steve Pikiell, in a statement. "He exemplifies everything we hope to develop in a student-athlete; he competed hard on the court and helped us win championships, he earned not only his bachelor's degree, but also his master's degree and now he's a pro. We wish him well as he moves to Japan to begin a new and exciting chapter of his career."

Brenton served as a captain of the Seawolves his junior and senior seasons and is the all-time leader in games played for the school with 127.
