River Hill Grad Has Big Day to Help Wake Forest Defeat Terps

Michael Campanaro had seven catches for Wake Forest while his alma mater beat Atholton for the region title.

It was a very good weekend for the River Hill High School football family.

The Hawks knocked off host Atholton, 21-12, on Friday night in the 3A East regional title game.

Atholton beat River Hill in the teams' regular-season matchup.

Onn Saturday, former River Hill standout Michael Campanaro, a wide receiver and kick returner for Wake Forest, helped beat his home state team.

Campanaro had seven catches for 80 yards as host Wake Forest beat Maryland, 31-10, in ACC play in North Carolina.

It was the seventh loss in a row for the Terps, who are 2-9.

Maryland ends its season Saturday at North Carolina State University.

Wake Forest completed 20 of 32 passes for 320 yards against Maryland. The Demon Deacons became Bowl eligible and are now 6-5 overall and 5-3 in the ACC.

"Defensively we played very, very well in the first half and in parts of the second half we gave up some big plays that hurt us," Maryland head coach Randy Edsall said after the game.

While River Hill beat Atholton on Friday, there was also a connection between the two schools in the Wake Forest-Maryland game. Atholton grad Matt Robinson is on the Maryland roster.

The Towson University football team won the CAA title with a win on Saturday at Rhode Island. The Tigers will host Lehigh Dec. 3 in the Division I-AA playoffs.

Eric Schuster (Reservoir) is a redshirt freshman defensive back on the Towson roster and Mike Evans (Reservoir) is a junior tight end.

In other college football, Division III Salisbury, with several players from Columbia, beat Western New England, 62-24, in the Division III playoffs on Saturday on the Eastern Shore.

Salisbury, No. 13 in the nation, will face No. 15 Kean on Saturday in the second round.
