Glenelg's Schaffer Named Ravens Coach of the Week

Glenelg High School football coach Butch Schaffer was named the Ravens High School Coach of the Week for his efforts leading the Gladiators over Howard High School last Friday.

Glenelg is now 4-1 on the season, losing their only game to River Hill (5-0) the first week of the season 7-3.

"Our team continues to improve every week," said Schaffer, in a statement. "I'm really proud of the kids' effort on the practice field and during games. They give everything they have on every play, and that's what we need to compete in the Howard County league."

The Gladiators' 35-20 victory over Howard on Friday was the second time in two weeks that Glenelg beat an undefeated county team. On Sept. 27, the team defeated Hammond 35-3. Hammond was 3-0 going into that game.

After five weeks of play, Glenelg is among three teams who are 4-1 just behind River Hill in the standings. Howard and Centennial are also 4-1.

Glenelg plays Oakland Mills (2-3) this Friday.

As part of winning the Ravens coach of the week, Glenelg will receive a $2,000 donation to its football program and Schaffer will receive an award certificate from Ravens head coach John Harbaugh and a specially-designed coach of the week hat.
