Glenelg, Centennial Top Howard County Seeds in Lacrosse Playoffs

The MPSSAA released the brackets for the state tournament on Monday.

Glenelg and Centennial High Schools are the top two seeds in the South region of the Maryland Athletic Association boys’ lacrosse playoffs (3a/2a), which takes place this month.

Both Glenelg (12-2) and Centennial (12-2) received first round byes. The third, fourth and fifth seeds in the South region—Mt. Hebron (11-3), Marriots Ridge (8-6), and Atholton (6-8)—also received first round byes.

In the first round, Wilde Lake (4-9) will face off against River Hill (3-6), Reservoir (5-4) will play Hammond (0-8) and Northeast, Anne Arundel (5-9) will play Long Reach (2-9).

The bottom half of the bracket features an intriguing possible rematch of Centennial and Mt. Hebron in the third round. The two teams played each other in the last game of the season, with Centennial ruining Mt. Hebron’s senior night, 10-7. That night Centennial’s Andrew Gavlin scored 7 goals, according to Explore Howard. In their first matchup, on April 6, Mt. Hebron beat Centennial, 9-7, according to Laxpower.com.

Glenelg has been cruising throughout most of the season. Their two losses this year are to opponents they won’t face in the state tournament; Boys’ Latin and Broadneck. Earlier this year they beat Mt. Hebron, 15–6, and Centennial, 6-5, according to Laxpower.com.

Both Mt. Hebron and Centennial feature two of the county’s best scorers. Mt. Hebron has Jake Stevens (60 goals, 26 assists) and Adam Huber (46 goals, 23 assists) while Centennial features Stephen Latona (55 goals, 10 assists) and Andrew Gavlin (32 goals and 20 assists), according to Explore Howard stats.
