Georgetown Hoyas Get Oakland Mills High's Greg Whittington

The Scorpions' star senior forward will step on the hardwood in Washington, D.C., as a freshman with a storied college basketball team.

Greg Whittington's time with the Oakland Mills Scorpions is coming to a close— but his time with a new team is set to start soon.

Whittington, the star 6-foot-9 senior forward, will soon be a freshman on the Georgetown Hoyas men's basketball team he told Patch on Sunday evening.

"It's a place close to home, and I can fit in their style of play," he said.

Among the other teams Whittington says were recruiting him were the University of Maryland, DePaul University (in Chicago) and Clemson University (in South Carolina).

Whittington was recently named the Howard County Player of the Year after a season in which he averaged 23.5 points, 11.6 rebounds and 4.4 blocks per game. Whittington was the most dominant player on the area's most dominant team.

Not only can he cause problems with his size, but Whittington also has a formidable outside shot—something not normally seen from a player his height. He led Oakland Mills in 3-pointers last season, hitting 37 of his 92 attempts—40.2 percent from beyond the arc.

He can struggle on the inside, however, and has become frustrated at times when he is not getting the ball consistently.

Whittington's final year of high school saw him carry Oakland Mills on his shoulders en route to a perfect regular season. The Scorpions were 25-0 when they met the Gwynn Park Yellow Jackets in the Division 2A South regional final.

That is where their season and Whittington's high-school basketball days ended.

But college will come soon. He already knows what he needs to work on between now and then.

"My ball-handling skills and strength and shooting," he said.
