An Evening With Jabari Asim

Meet nationally recognized author Jabari Asim, whose first novel A Taste of Honey is a collection of short stories that examines the racial tensions of the late 1960s. The characters in these nostalgic, inter-related stories live in a nurturing, loving, yet frequently troubling African American community in the Midwest. A Taste of Honey offers a fascinating glimpse into the realities of African American life that are rarely honestly depicted in contemporary fiction. Cosponsored by Howard County NAACP Youth Council.

Asim's other books include What Obama Means--For Our Culture, Our Politics, Our Future and the controversial The N Word : Who Can Say It, Who Shouldn't, and Why. One of the most influential literary and cultural critics of his generation, Asim has worked for The Washington Post's Book World, has had reviews appear in The New York Times, and is currently editor-in-chief of The Crisis magazine, a journal of politics, ideas, and culture published by the NAACP. His impressive resume also includes time as vice president of the National Book Critics Circle, and Associate Professor at Emerson College.

Asim is a former scholar-in-residence at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who has also published children's books. His board books educate and entertain toddlers: Whose Knees Are These? and Whose Toes Are Those?
