Columbia's Brown Catches First NFL Interception, Tackled by Quarterback

Columbia's Zach Brown may be one of the fastest players on the football field when he suits up for the Tennessee Titans, but this past weekend his speed wasn't enough. On Sunday, he recorded his first NFL interception against the Miami Dolphins, but the speedy linebacker was unable to beat one person—Dolphins' quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

The 6-foot-1, 242 pound Brown intercepted the ball at Miami's 27-yard-line and took off in a straight line, with only one man to beat. That's when Tannehill came out of seemingly nowhere and tackled Brown at the Titans' 35.

Brown, who has recorded 55 tackles and a forced fumble along with an interception through 10 games with the Titans, was a star running back at Wilde Lake High School. Brown graduated from Wilde Lake in 2007 and was the Maryland state champion in the 100 meter and 200m dash during his senior year.

After the game, Brown told the Tennessean, "He is faster than I thought he was. I knew nobody behind me was going to catch me, and then I saw (Tannehill) about 20 yards downfield. I’m thinking, ‘I’ve just got to run. It’s the quarterback.’ But I lost (sight) of him for a minute and then he just seemed to pop up at the last second.”

Brown clocked a 4.5 second 40-yard-dash at the NFL combine in February, tying him for the fastest time ever clocked by an inside linebacker, according to NFL statistics.

The Titans won the game in a 37-3 blowout.
