Service Tuesday at Noon for 200 Dogs in Maryland, Victims of Rockville Animal Hoarder

The ashes of more than 200 dogs will be laid to rest at the Baltimore Humane Society’s cemetery in Reisterstown Tuesday, after Judy Cahill of Rockville was found guilty of animal neglect. Police discovered more than 50 dogs and the remains of many others in her home in Montgomery County, Maryland, in 2009. Some had been there for 30 years. She is not permitted to have any animals for 10 years.

Animal hoarding, a mental illness and one form of animal cruelty, according to laws in all 50 states, affects a quarter of a million animals in the US annually (http://www.aspca.org/fight-cruelty/animal-hoarding/animal-hoarding-faq). There are as many as 2000 new cases a year.

Hoarders keep too many pets which leads to neglect, malnutrition and medical problems for the animals and possibly for humans. In addition, hoarders deny that they are not capable of adequately caring for their animals.

The service is open to the public and will begin at noon at Nicodemus Memorial Park on the grounds of the Baltimore Humane Society, 1601 Nicodemus Road, Reisterstown.

Perhaps we could all take a moment to remember these souls at noon Tuesday.

As the ASPCA says, “There’s no excuse for animal abuse.”
