The Sato Project: Saving the dogs of Dead Dog Beach, Puerto Rico
EverythingDogBlog #70: de-Lightful Logos
What is a Sato?
Puerto Rico has 250,000 stray dogs in Puerto Rico. To date, no humane solution has been found for what locals call satos and often see as vermin: the euthanasia rate in the municipal shelters is 99%; the adoption rate, less than 1%.

Dead Dog Beach
The Sato Project is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to rescuing abandoned and abused dogs in Puerto Rico. The group works primarily on the infamous Dead Dog Beach, where dogs are dumped and abused daily. Dogs are rescued, fully vetted and flown to loving homes in the US. The Sato Project is currently opening their first sanctuary in Boston.

The Logo
About the logo: a mix of the Puerto Rican flag on the left and the American flag on the right, with the silhouette of a sato. The dog is "protected" by the stars from the American flag, which gently fall on the dog like sparkles, a sign of a new life.
But the dog still looks proudly at the Puerto Rican star. And the abbreviation for Puerto Rico, PR, is part of the logo.
The Sato Project’s Goal
Our goal with The Sato Project is that satos may become Puerto Rican national treasures and won't have to leave the island anymore in order to have a beautiful life.
One day, they will be loved and cared for on their native island.
May that day come soon!
