Finding a Shelter
To find shelters or rescues in your area, visit this site (thanks, ASPCA) and plug in your zip code as well as the distance from that zip code that you are willing to go for your next best friend.

For example, in a 15-mile radius of zip code 21044 in Maryland, there are at least 25 shelters and rescues (rescues, often breed-specific, consist of a network of foster homes and are listed if their mailing address is located in the area). That is how I found the shelter I am currently working with, Small Miracles Cat and Dog Rescue (see photo).
Finding the Right Dog for You
Trainer Michael Baugh has written a very personal and helpful blog for KONG at KONG Connect about finding a shelter dog who is right for you. He found his two dogs in October, too.

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue will have adoptable dogs at Clipper’s Canine Café in Savage Mill the last Saturday of October from 12-2. Come visit some adoptables and get all your canine supplies at the same time.
