Canine Collegiate Mascots Abound

EverythingDogBlog #93: Gritty the Chessie is not Alone

According to the DogingtonPost, the most frequent college mascot from the dog world, with 19 representatives, is a bulldog like Uga from the U of GA, Bully from Mississippi State and Spike from Gonzaga University in Spokane (since I am from Spokane, I also need to add that the mascot of the GU Prep School is the bulldog puppy, the bullpup, and Prep’s cross-town rivals, the Lewis and Clark orange and black Tigers yell, ‘Fill the air with puppy hair!’)

Second Place Goes to. . . .

Second place goes to the Siberian Huskies of seven different colleges including Victor E. Husky of NIU and Harry the Husky of the University of Washington (another of my alma maters, see photo) who is actually an Alaskan Malamute.

Other Hardworking Canine Collegians

Other famous college canines include a Saluki, a Collie, a Saint, a Boston, a Dane, a Grey, and a Bluetick Coonhound.

A Bloodhound represents the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and two Scotties also work as college mascots, including one from Agnes Scott College (how original is that?).

And would you believe the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point has a Pointer, the NC State Wolfpack has the Tamaskan Dog, and Michigan State has a Lab – finally - America’s favorite dog.

And, Finally, . . . .

The Howard Community College dragons live on in Columbia, Maryland, with Duncan the Dragon, while I hear the Georgetown Hoyas rock and students from a community college in California are nicknamed the Artichokes! Really!
