Gallery: Glenelg High Hosts Jazz Concert

Glenelg High School Jazz Ensemble recently shared the stage with the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors.

The Glenelg High School Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Barry P. Enzman, has earned a reputation for excellence on both a state and national level. 

The group shared the stage on Jan. 27 with the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors in a concert held at the school.

This outstanding ensemble has distinguished itself by receiving more than 60 awards and first-place finishes in local and national competitions over the past 10 years.

The group has been featured at many conventions, festivals and competitions from Canada to Florida.  The Jazz Ensemble has also been selected to perform eight times at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland; the North Sea Jazz Festival in Den Haag, Holland; “Jazz a Vienne” in Lyon, France; the famous Jazzhaus in Freiburg,Germany, and Jazz a Juan in Antibes, France. 

The group has also been featured on Maryland Public Television during its airing of the Ken Burns’ special, Jazz.

In recent years, the ensemble had the honor of being the ensemble used in jazz legend Maynard Ferguson’s first educational video.  This ensemble has also opened for Ferguson, Chuck Mangione and The Count Basie Orchestra at concerts at Glenelg and has performed at the Baltimore/Washington Jazz Fest, the Howard County Arts Festival and the Columbia Festival of the Arts.

Many local and national jazz and blues personalities have guest soloed with the band including: Maynard Ferguson, Frank Foster, Chris Vadala, Dave Steinmeyer, Tom Williams, Carl Filipiac, Deanna Bogart, Damon Forman, Ron Diehl and Carl Fischer.
