Security Updates Being Completed at Schools

Buzzers, cameras and safety exercises are part of the security measures being implemented in county schools.

Shortly after the deadly Newtown school shooting, County Executive Ken Ulman announced a series of security upgrades planned to make county schools safer.

On Friday, Ulman and schools Superintendent Renee Foose provided an update on the security measures. These included the installation of buzz-in entrance systems at every elementary school and middle school by the end of Spring 2014, police access to school security cameras during emergencies, and the completion of lock-down exercises at all schools.

"A year ago, we put together a joint task force to examine school safety," said Ulman, in a statement. "We are systematically implementing their findings. This is not a report gathering dust. We are making our community safer."

The upgrades are part of a $2 million effort by the county to increase security at the schools.

In addition to the school building upgrades, on-board digital camera systems are scheduled to be installed on 212 school buses by the end of next month.

"Part of being a world-class school system is creating a culture where children are secure," said Supt. Foose, in a statement. "We are doing that."
