Blog Recap: School Redistricting Meeting Draws Emotional Audience

Attendance area changes being considered to help ease overcrowding will affect 10 schools.

The Board of Education hosted a public hearing on school redistricting on Tuesday night that drew a crowd of about 140 residents, many of whom delivered emotional statements about the impact of redistricting on schools, communities and families.

Redistrictng is necessary because of overcrowded elementary schools in the southeast portion of the county, according to Howard County Public School System officials.

Adjustments in attendance areas will allow school officials to ease overcrowding by transferring students to underutilized schools.

Residents will have one final chance to offer suggestions and voice concerns at a public hearing set for Nov. 15.

The board could make a final decision as soon as Nov. 17.
