Fulton School Gets National Recognition

Lime Kiln Middle School has been selected as a National Blue Ribbon School.

Lime Kiln Middle School in Fulton, along with six other Maryland schools, was selected this week to receive the 2011-2012 National Blue Ribbon award.

The national distinctintion is based on consistently meeting or exceeding high standards for school achievement and improvement.

According to a press release from the Maryland State Department of Education, Lime Kiln has consistently excelled in a number of areas in recent years.

More than 90 percent of the students attending classes there demonstrate proficient or better skills in math and reading.

As a designated "Green School" by the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education, Lime Kiln students have also demonstrated strong skills in environmental literacy. Students from Lime Kiln have also won the Maryland Junior Envirothon Competition for five of the last six years.

Teachers at Lime Kiln have also been recognized for their exceptional work. Educators from this school have been honored with both the Agnes Meyer Teacher of the Year award in 2009 and the Maryland Art Education Teacher of the Year award in 2010.

In the MSDE press release, Gov. Martin O’Malley congratulated Lime Kiln and the other Maryland schools selected.

“We are excited by the exemplary work of their students, educators, and parents,” he said. “These schools, and many more like them, give us enormous confidence in our state’s future.”

Lime Kiln, along with other Blue Ribbon schools from across the country, are invited to Washington, D.C. on Nov. 14 and 15, where education officials including U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will congratulate them on their achievements in person.

Below is a list of the other five Maryland schools selected for the award: 

  • Mt. Washington Elementary School, Baltimore City
  • Towson High School Public Law and Policy, Baltimore County
  • Severna Park High School, Anne Arundel County
  • Oklahoma Road Middle School, Carroll County
  • Bel Air Elementary School, Allegany County
