Project Access of Howard Community College Holds April 8 Conference on Students with Disabilities

Project Access of Howard Community College (HCC) will hold its ninth annual conference for parents and professionals, “Transitioning Students with Disabilities…Success on the Postsecondary Level and Beyond,” on Friday, April 8, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center lobby on the campus of HCC.

Debra A. Neubert, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Special Education at University of Maryland, will deliver a keynote presentation on postsecondary options for students with disabilities. James H.Wendorf, M.A., executive director, National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD),will give a luncheon keynote presentation titled, “Learn to Succeed: Creating a Vision and Strategy for College and Career Readiness.” Over a dozen workshops are scheduled with experts from throughout Maryland on topics including:

  • transitioning from high school to college with the dual disadvantages of poverty and disability
  • academic interventions for at-risk community college students
  • learning strategies for student success
  • recent developments in assistive technology
  • final and pending ADA regulations
  • using basketball as a means to prepare students with orthopedic impairments for the workplace
  • disclosing psychological disabilities

Also scheduled to appear is a stand-up comedian with Asperger syndrome.

Registration is $130 between March 19 and April 2, and $140 for registration received after April 2 or on-site. The conference fee includes lunch and accommodations (sign language interpreter, enlarged print/Braille materials, etc.) are available upon request.
