Cold Bursts Pipes at Clarksville Middle, Running Brook Elementary

The school system's director of facilities said there were a few minor problems, but that school staff worked hard to solve building issues during the recent cold snap.

Howard County school buildings handled the recent frigid temperatures well, with a few exceptions, according to Ken Roey, the executive director of school facilities.

"We didn't have to close any schools like other jurisdictions," said Roey.

Some school buildings in Anne Arundel County were closed or suffered heating problems, while Prince George's County schools opened two hours late on Tuesday as temperatures dropped into the teens with a biting wind chill, according to an Associated Press report.

Roey said a pipe burst at Clarksville Middle School that closed multiple classrooms and the media center, but the school remained open.

At Running Brook Elementary School, a pipe burst near the rear of the building on Tuesday, causing several students to be relocated to the cafeteria, according to an email from the principal.

Roey said more problems related to the cold were more likely if the frigid temperatures continued. However, the National Weather Service predicts temperatures to warm over the next several days. The weather service expects highs to reach the 50s this weekend.
