Retired Teacher Inspired by Children's Play Center in Columbia Mall

Child Playtime and Swellness Center is full of color! It's clean, safe and stimulating; adults must remain. I'm proud of the hard work and perseverance I provided. Come see what you think!

After retiring from the Howard County Public School System, I substituted until I was asked by my son and daughter-in-law to provide child care for my infant grandson. I commuted from Howard County to Laurel daily; along the way I would try to think of ways to entertain him throughout the day. Firstly, I set up his play space in their sun room with educational books, toys, puzzles, soft rubber matting, musical instruments, art supplies and bright colors. It was important to me to create an interesting, stimulating environment. To get out of the house, we would travel to the Columbia Mall to the Thursday children's programs, to Howard County Hospital's sponsored play area, to the Merry-go-round and then we would eat lunch together in the food court. We had wonderful times together bonding. In the play area I would see lots of children and adults socializing and enjoying themselves. This inspired me to develop a center where these "good times" could continue with the addition of providing hands-on activities for young children who in turn could motivate the adult with them (moms dads, grand parents, nannies, etc.) to participate and engage as well. I also want to promote early childhood healthy nutrition to better prepare young children for school by providing free meetings for adults with health and nutrition experts teaching and discussing wholesome foods, food preparation and exercise to increase good brain development. I hope to hear from many volunteers. The children's center is completed (I decorated everything myself to help save money with help from my family and friends). Now I need the children and the public to know it's available and waiting for you to enjoy. Please visit during the free play times of April 1 through 4; let me know what you think. I want to continue servicing my community and bringing happiness to children and adults in a purposeful way. I also have a number of social programs to teach young children charity for those family members who might be interested.
