Terri Hill Talks District 12 Candidacy

The Columbia resident, a graduate of Wilde Lake High, said she decided to run after talking with Liz Bobo.

After all three incumbents from District 12 announced they would retire from the state legislature, it didn't take long for candidates to begin announcing their intention to run in 2014.

One of those candidates is Columbia's Terri Hill, a Democrat and plastic surgeon as well as a graduate of Wilde Lake High School and a resident of Harper's Choice.

Hill said "politics is something I've always been fruitfully involved in" and that she decided to run after talking with Delegate Liz Bobo. She previously worked on Liz Bobo's 2010 election campaign and President Barack Obama's 2012 campaign, according to an Explore Howard report.

Hill has a degree in bioelectric engineering from Harvard and a medical degree from Columbia University, according to her website.

She said the issues she'll focus on include making sure Maryland has good schools, that workers and businesses stay in state and that the upcoming implementation of the healthcare plan is done smoothly.

"We need to develop our healthcare plan so it serves the people of Maryland," said Hill, who said the state needs to focus on promoting preventative medicine.

She said having a physician representing the communtiy will be crucial as the healthcare plan develops.

"It's very different to have people to come and testify than to have someone in the backroom," said Hill.

Currently, Hill is facing off against another District 12 candidate from Columbia who is also a medical doctor—Clarence Lam.

As of January 2013, Hill has raised a total of $4,865 for her campaigning, according to public finance records.

District 12, which includes West Columbia, Catonsville, Elkridge, Halethorpe, Arbutus, Lansdowne and the Baltimore Highlands, was recently redistricted to include Downtown Columbia. The three incumbent delegates from the district—Bobo, James Malone and Steve DeBoy—all announced they would retire after the 2014 legislative session.
