Agree with many of these sentiments. Definitely not spending any money at Perfect Pour or King's Contrivance liquor stores since they can't deal with competition.
I love how people complain about corporatization (if it affects their own jobs), but can't get off their lazy tushes to buy liquor from locals. "The corporate mega market is more convenient--waah, waah, waah!" Cry babies! For once, I'm proud of a decision by the HoCo Council!
The law against grocery stores selling alcohol is a dumb law, but it is the law, and you can't fault the board for following the law or for existing retailers for arguing that the law should be applied.
If this decision is a big deal to you, call your state legislators and tell them the law is dumb and should be changed.
No, Matt. It's not quite that cut and dry, the law is debateable. Clearly Wegmans and their attorneys have a very different interpretation of the law than you do. If it were as simple as the law clearly making this illegal, why is the liquor board waxing on about killing the village centers?
Besides, the liquor board could have approved this and let the the legal part be determined by the courts, as it should be. No doubt it's legality would have been challenged anyway by the liquor lobby.
It would be interesting to see if people care enough about this issue to put pressure on state/ county legislators to try to get the law changed. One of the problems though, is that there's a confusion about whether it's a state law or a county law prohibiting a store like this. In some jurisdictions in Maryland chain stores can sell beer/ wine (a Giant on the Eastern Shore, a Harris Teeter in Baltimore City).
I'm currently working on an article about this, but the law tends to be different county to county.
To CoolCol: I buy from the store with the best prices, the best assistance and the best products. Your plea that I buy from someone just because he happens to live or work near me is primitive reasoning and anticapitalistic.

Can someone tell me what is the plan for the Dennis Lane Memorial? Is this to benefit his family?…Read More Set up a scholarship? I would just like a little more information before I decide to write a check...
Thanks.
