Howard County Named Top Digital County

Howard was named a top county in a survey that measures how well counties share information through technology.

The Center for Digital Government named Howard County one of the top 10 digital counties in 2013. The county came in eighth place for the 250,000 to 499,999 population category.

The survey examines counties across the country and ranks them based on how they use technology to keep citizens informed and help them use local government resources.

"Our goal is to embrace technology not for the sake of innovation alone, but with a purpose," said County Executive Ken Ulman, in a statement. "We strive to deliver services more effectively, efficiently and conveniently to residents, visitors and all who do business in Howard County."

The county cited its website's abilities to provide the following information as helpful to residents:

  • Job opportunities
  • Browse latest news releases
  • Give budget testimony
  • Register for recreation and parks classes
  • Pay bills
  • Obtain government licenses
  • Use interactive GIS maps
Other Maryland counties that ranked higher than Howard County on the 2013 survey included Montgomery County (1st in 500,000 or more pop.), Prince George's County (5th in 500,000 or more category), Baltimore County (7th in 500,000 or more), and Charles County (1st in less than 150,000 population category).
