Dog Park a Possibility in Blandair Park

Two locations are being examined inside the new park for an off-leash dog park.

The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is considering creating a dog park at the newly opened in Columbia.

In a public hearing notification, the department wrote that due to popularity of the dog park in Ellicott City and multiple residents asking for one in Columbia, the county is considering locating one at Blandair Park.

“We have investigated various possibilities, including Blandair Park,” the statement says. “Two areas one on the north and one on the south, could be well suited for this usage.”

The area in the north is located between a flexible use area and an open meadow, just behind the festival lawn. The area in the south is between the playground and the multi-purpose fields.

A public hearing on the proposed dog park is scheduled for May 17 at 7 p.m. at Parks and Recreation headquarters, 7120 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia.

The notification says a dog park was suggested when work was being done on the Master Plan for Blandair Park, but demand then was not great.

Has that sentiment changed? Would you support a dog park in Blandair Park?

A dog park would be great. Dog parks encourage goodownership behavior and good social behavior in thedogs.

A dog park would be dumb. Dog parks encourage the fragmenting of existing space into hyper specific use cases. Just use a regular park as your "dog park".

I am all for a dog park in Columbia so I can let my pup run free without being afraid of getting a ticket on two conditions: 1) people who use it take care of it (pick up after your dog, don't leave trash) and 2) if you know you have an aggressive dog, don't bring it unless you can control it.

A dog park IS a hyper specific use for a reason. Dog parks are off leash so therefore using a regular park as a dog park is not feasible. Dogs should not be and are not allowed off leash in a regular park due to risks to humans.

Maybe dogs should be on leash at all times? If there is a risk to humans in a regular park then, gosh, why let them free in a dog park either?

Dogs need to run and play - unleashed. Howard County has only ONE dog park. A trip there to watch them enjoy themselves is a treat. Blandair would be a wonderful place for a dog park, especially for Columbians.

It sounds like we need to repeal leash laws so that dogs can fulfill their need to run and play unleashed!

I'm in favor of a dog park too. My baby would love to socialize with others of his kind. @Matt M - are you serious? or are you just trying to incite canine owners?

We need another Dog Park, the one in Ellicott City gets pretty crowded. columbia would be a great location for a dog park. Matt M obviously you are not a dog person. Dogs need to play and run, just like kids do.
