Comptroller Comes to Howard County to Help Small Businesses with Affordable Care Act

Comptroller Peter Franchot is kicking off a state-wide effort to help small businesses implement the health care law's requirements on Monday in Columbia.

Comptroller Peter Franchot will be at Howard Community College on Monday to announce an outreach effort to help small businesses comply with the requirements of the Affordable Care Act.

More than 5,000 businesses in Maryland will be eligible for tax credits under the new healthcare law, which will continue to be implemented in phases over the next 10 years, according to the Horizon Foundation, a Columbia health nonprofit.

Franchot is working with the Horizon Foundation to provide information to small businesses on how to comply with requirements of the act.

Earlier this month, an Ellicott City restaurant owner was profiled in the New York Times about how the requirement to providing healthcare to his employees, if he has over 50 full time employees, would hurt the profitability of his business.

The event on Monday will also feature Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings. It begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Rouse Student Services Hall, Room 400, at 10901 Little Patuxent Pkwy, Columbia.
