City Dock Restaurant Closes One Month After Opening

The Crown and Anchor shut its doors for good on Oct. 30 citing permitting issues with Annapolis.

Five weeks after opening its doors on City Dock, the Crown and Anchor announced it would be closing.

The announcement was made on the company's Facebook Page, and stated that "many unforeseen problems have arisen concerning permits and usage."

The restaurant located at 12 Dock St. used to be one location that was owned by Phillip's Seafood. The property was legally split into two spaces when the National Sailing Center and Hall of Fame bought the deck portion in 2009. 

The center plans to convert the space into a museum, but fundraising is going slower than expected.

Phillip's re-opened on the deck portion of the building in August, calling it Phillip's Crab Deck. The company anticipates the deck will be open for two years while the center finishes its fundraising.

The British-style pub was supposed to remain open after the museum was built, but permitting issues made half of the restaurant's first floor unusable for the "foreseeable future."

The post states that the owners tried to negotiate a reduced rent while a large portion of the restaurant sat vacant, but they were unable to come to an agreement that worked.

"Our staff has worked hard, are an excellent group of people and have achieved much," according to the post. "We hope to be in a position to offer them employment in the future."

Owners Jon and Lesley Marsden did not return Patch's request for comment, but their Facebook post states the couple is looking for another location around Annapolis to potentially re-open the restaurant. 

According to the post, "We also hope that the old Harbour House building will eventually find an operator to revive it and make it a success again."

It is a little convoluted. In the beginning, the building was one and it had one seafood restaurant owned by Phillip's. Then the sailing center bought part of the building to build a museum and the other half became a different seafood restaurant called Hell's Seafood. The sailing center didn't raise the money for the museum as fast as they thought they would so they rented their part of the building back to Phillip's, which re-opened it as the Crab Deck. Hell's Seafood closed in February. Crown & Anchor replaced Hell's and opened in late September. They have closed as well. I hope that better explains it.

Went there this past Friday and the fish and chips were awesome. Sad to see them close.

Actually it was more to do with the Landlords and a large part of the premises being unfit for purpose, rather than the City's permitting process.

Wow...I really hope they resolve the issues and can re-open. Was looking forward to going real fish and chips!
