UPDATED: UMd. Alumnus Alerted Police to Online Threats of Campus Shooting

Police charged 19-year-old student Alexander Song of Fulton with a misdemeanor and took him to a hospital for psychiatric analysis.

Fulton, Md. - Update, 10:30 a.m. Monday

After a University of Maryland alumnus alerted police Saturday night about the threatening messages online, police worked alongside UMd.'s Office of Information Technology to track down Alexander Song, The Diamondback reported.

Song's roommate at Oakland Hall, Brian Barnett, said he knew his roommate was stressed, but he was surprised to learn about the threatening messages, according to The Diamondback.

University of Maryland police arrested and charged a student who threatened to go on a "shooting rampage" on campus, police said.

According to police, UMd. student Alexander Song, 19, of Fulton, MD, posted the following statements online:

  • "I will be on a shooting rampage tomorrow on campus."
  • "Hopefully I kill enough people to make it to national news."
  • "Stay away from the Mall tomorrow at 1:30."

According to WTOP, Marc Limansky, a spokesman for the UMd. police department, said Song's comments were posted to the site Reddit and the anonymous chat site Omegle.

Police charged Song with a misdemeanor and he was taken to an area hospital for psychiatric evaluation. Song was unarmed at the time of the arrest, police said. The charge is punishable by a fine up to $2,500 and/or up to six months in jail.

Song is not allowed on campus pending a review, police said.
