Two Killed in Sunday's Fatal Collision, 8-Year-Old Seriously Injured

More information about the deadly collision was released Tuesday by state police.

Maryland State police have released more information Tuesday on the fatal crash Sunday officials originally said killed one woman and seriously injured a child.

Officials said Tuesday that two people were killed in the accident early Sunday morning on Interstate 95 North near Waterloo Road in Columbia after a three-car collision.

On Monday, a state police spokesperson told Patch there was one confirmed fatality: Sadia Soto, 31, of Arlington VA., was killed after being trapped in a Toyota 4Runner that was engulfed in flames.

On Tuesday, Patch spoke with Sgt. Anthony Riley of the state police's Waterloo Barracks, who said Limberg Olivera, 36, of Alexandria VA, was also killed in the accident.

An 8-year-old child was seriously injured and transported to Johns Hopkins shock trauma center in Baltimore after the accident. Police did not comment on the current condition of the child.

Riley provided additional details of the deadly accident. He said Soto, Olivera, the child and another man, Jesus Olivera, also of Alexandria, were driving a 1997 Toyota 4Runner on Interstate 95 North at approximately 5:55 a.m. when the trailer they were pulling became disengaged.

At that time, Limberg Olivera exited the 4Runner, which they had stopped in lane three of I-95, to attempt to fix the trailer, according to Riley. After exiting, Olivera was struck by a 2010 Acura TL, driven by Mary Kozma-Fornaro of Glen Allen, VA, killing him, according to Riley.

Shortly after, the 4Runner was struck by a 2011 Jeep driven by Wilbur Irick of Laurel, according to Riley. This collision caused both the Jeep and the 4Runner to become fully engulfed in flames, according to a police statement. Soto, who was inside the 4Runner, was unable to escape, but the 8-year-old child was extracted from the vehicle by Jesus Olivera and Irick, according to Riley.

Riley said the accident is currently under investigation and any decision to press charges likely won't be released for at least another 30 days. He said the speed of the vehicles involved in the accident had not been determined.

"At that time, Limberg Olivera exited the 4Runner, ***which they had stopped in lane three of I-95***, to attempt to fix the trailer, according to Riley." They stopped ~in the middle~ of I-95, and got out of their vehicle, to fix the problem?! My condolences to the families for their lost ones, but that has got to be one for the Darwin awards. A shame a bystander was killed and a child was hurt because of these actions.

Both of the deceased were in the same vehicle , the 1 that stopped.

Yes, that's correct, both of the deceased were in the same vehicle, as well as the child.

You have got to be a numb skull to STOP in a TRAVEL LANE OF a 4-lane interstate in pre-dawn dim light. This was a completely uncalled for and needless crash. I wonder if the trailer was even properly attached? Safety chains??
MyBrandy October 09, 2012 at 09:02 PM
I definitely agree with comments that it was very dangerous to stop in lane 3 but I can't help but think they may have been forced to do so if trailer was separating or hitch was already dragging, perhaps by chains. A very tragic and sad accident and it could actually have resulted in an even bigger pile-up of vehicles given the lane and the dim light.

Even if I had a trailor that became detached, and I had no choice but to stop, you better believe Id pull over FAR away from a traveling lane (esp on 95!) and either drag the trailor, or leave it on 95.... But Id def get my vehicle that has my CHILD in it out of the way! Of course its a tragic incident.... Lacking common sense. It IS 95 after all.

Fools and idiots shouldn't be allowed to travel with children in the car. How much you wanna bet the other drivers were too focused on their smartphones or coffees to see the vehicle in the first place?

Why do people always feel the need to place blame and insult people? They made a mistake and they paid dearly for it.

Jessica - the speed limit on that portion of I-95 is 65 mph. At that time of the morning (dark) and assuming they are traveling at the posted speed, it was would probably be difficult to see a vehicle and/or trailer stopped in a lane. Especially if the trailer became unhook and didn't have lights on it. I agree they should have tried to get over to the shelter and probably even leave the trailer if need be and call State Police asap. There are A LOT of drivers in this area who do not know the rules of the road.
sharon gilbert October 14, 2012 at 04:29 PM
Because the people that are being blamed are at fault and did something really stupid that affected more than just them. To be politically incorrect, there is an extremely serious problem in the DC/Balt metro area of people coming here from other countries and driving on our roads without knowing the rules of the road. Whether they are legal or illegal.
Sandra Conway October 15, 2012 at 06:34 PM
Because in this world, Kristin, people blame people who are at fault. Society does, the government does it, the Judicial system does it, etc. Just because they made a mistake, doesnt mean they arent at fault or arent to blame. Welcome to reality.

Sharon, is your statement based on personal experience? I don't mean to be rude but you're making an overly broad generalization. Back up your statement with facts/numbers please.
