SUV and Train Collide in Jessup, Woman Arrested

Howard County police took a woman into custody Thursday afternoon for allegedly driving without a license after her Ford Explorer hit a train on Tar Bay Drive.

A woman was arrested Thursday afternoon after the vehicle she was driving collided with a train in an industrial area of Jessup, according to Sherry Llewellyn, spokeswoman for the Howard County Police Department.

The Ford Explorer was crossing the train tracks on Tar Bay Drive near Oceano Avenue at about 3:30 p.m. when a cargo train struck the vehicle, Llewellyn said.

Nobody was injured in the collision.

“The train was coming at a slow rate of speed, and she [the driver of the Ford Explorer] was traveling at a low rate of speed. That’s why nobody was injured,” Llewellyn said.

Police said the SUV driver was aware that the train was coming but was nevertheless trying to get across the tracks before it arrived.

Police arrested the woman for allegedly driving without a license and took her to the Howard County Detention Center, also in Jessup. Her name has not yet been released.

It was unclear how many passengers were in the vehicle, as one passenger fled before authorities arrived, police said.
