Residential Fire Under Investigation

A working fire alarm and sprinkler system kept residents safe, fire from spreading.

Investigators are on the scene trying to determine the cause of a fire in Laurel near the Columbia border, according to a statement released by the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services (HCDFRS).

According to the statement, HCDFRS received a call at about 5 p.m. of a reported fire on the 8700 block of Weathered Stone Way. When crews arrived they found fire and smoke in the attic of the residence, a two-story house.

Crews began to fight the fire from the inside, according to HCDFRS, bringing the blaze under control in about 20 minutes.

The residence had working fire detectors and residents had evacuated before crews arrived, according to the statement, and a sprinkler system kept the fire from spreading 

At about 6:30 p.m., according to the statement, fire investigators were still on scene trying to determine what caused the fire.
