Sobriety Checkpoint Scheduled for this Weekend
Police said the holiday period comes with a high numbers of alcohol-related traffic fatalities.
Howard County Police will conduct a sobriety checkpoint this weekend at an undisclosed location in the county.
The checkpoint will be marked with signs, lights and uniformed officers. Police will look for drunk drivers as well as people who fail to use seat belts or proper child safety seats.
Police said December is national "3D" month, held annually to combat drunk and drugged driving in the country. The time period between Thanksgiving and New Year's eve is one of the busiest for the nation's roads, with a high incidence of alcohol-related traffic fatalities, reported police.
Last year, police cited 1,174 individuals for driving under the influence, while 30 percent of the county's fatal collisions were alcohol-related, said police.
