Sexual Assault Reported on Columbia Footpath

Police are searching for a suspect believed to be involved with a sexual assault on a pathway near Stone Cloud and Majors Lane.

Howard County police are looking for a man who sexually assaulted a woman as she ran on a Columbia footpath near the intersection of Stone Cloud and Majors Lane, just off Rouse Parkway, around 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 7.

A woman was running on the pathway when a man ran behind her, grabbed both of her breasts from behind and then ran away when the woman screamed, said police. A witness then ran toward the woman screaming and joined the victim in making a report to police.

The suspect was described as a black male, 20 to 30 years old, with no facial hair, wearing dark athletic clothing.

Police said they have increased patrols in the area on bike and foot. They ask that anyone with possible information call 410-313-STOP. Callers may remain anonymous.

Police provided the following tips to stay safe on sidewalks or pathways:

•Familiarize yourself with the area, and know your route before you travel.
•Stay on designated sidewalks and pathways, and do not venture off into isolated areas.
•When possible, bring a buddy.
•If traveling alone, tell family or friends where you are going and when you expect to return.
•Stay alert, and carry a cell phone.
•Do not wear headphones because they may distract you from your surroundings.
•If a stranger approaches, follows you or makes you feel uncomfortable, turn around, call police and head toward a group of people or a home.
