The checkpoint is one of several that have occurred throughout the year. A checkpoint on Route 1 in North Laurel in August netted five arrests and one in Columbia on MD 175 eastbound in March led to the arrest of two people.

Twenty-five percent of the county's fatal collisions in 2011 were alcohol-related, according to police. In 2011, police arrested 1,391 individuals for driving under the influence.
