Police: Pickup Truck Driver Suffered Medical Emergency Causing Pileup

Police released more details Monday about a pileup that sent eight people, including a 7-year-old boy, to area hospitals on Saturday morning.

A pickup truck driver towing a trailer had a medical emergency that caused a chain reaction and resulted in a pileup of five cars on Route 175 near the intersection with Route 108 around 11:49 a.m. on Saturday, according to police spokesperson Mary Phelan.

Phelan did not provide details about the medical emergency, citing medical privacy reasons. 

The 7-year-old is in critical, but stable, condition at John's Hopkins Children's Center, according to police.

The seven adults who were injured are in stable condition or have been released from the following hospitals, according to police:

• Alessandra Almeida Rodrigues, 19, of Odenton - Howard County General
• Julian Douglas Hord, 39, of Blacksburg, S.C. - University of Maryland Shock Trauma
• Kevin George O'Connor, 60, of Columbia - Howard County General
• Susan Fleming O'Connor, 59, of Columbia - Howard County General
• Kristyn Bristol Loomis, 34, of Columbia - Howard County General
• William Salatore Tarantino, 35, of Columbia - Howard County General

A ninth person involved in the accident refused medical treatment at the scene, according to police.

Phelan said, in an email, that the medical emergency was the contributing factor to the pileup, not the roadway configuration.
