Police Release Mugshot of Man Shot by Officer at BJs

Police said the officer involved in the shooting was put on paid administrative leave, a standard procedure.

Howard County Police released a 2012 mugshot of the man who was shot by police on Wednesday at BJ's Wholesale Club in Columbia.

Howard Carvel Smith, 33, of Columbia, remains in critical condition at Shock Trauma as a result of the shooting, according to police. Police said he has not yet been charged in Wednesday's incident.

The 2012 mugshot is from an assault arrest in an Anne Arundel County case that is listed in online court records as nolle prosequi, or that prosecutors declined to pursue it.

On Wednesday, Smith was shot by a Howard County police officer after a series of events in which police said he brandished a knife at a security guard, bus driver and police officers.

Police did not release the name of the officer involved in the shooting, but said he is an 8-year veteran assigned to southern district patrol. The officer was placed on administrative leave, with pay, which is standard procedure.

Police expect to release the officer's name Friday.
