Phone Scammer Poses as Maryland State Police

Caller ID shows Waterloo barrack number.

Someone has been posing as a Maryland State Police official and demanding money over the phone, police said this week.

Starting around 6 p.m. Wednesday, citizens reported that a man left messages or spoke with them directly saying they owed money for fines or traffic violations and would be arrested unless they paid up, according to WUSA 9.

The caller ID shows that the call is coming from the Waterloo barrack of Maryland State Police; the number of the barrack is 410-799-2101.

"Hang up," Maryland State Police advised. "Do not respond."

More than a dozen people reported that they received calls, mainly in the Howard County and Baltimore areas, according to WBAL.

The caller is "spoofing [the] Waterloo barrack number," according to police, who encourage citizens who may have been contacted to call the actual barrack at 410-799-2101 to report it.

The issue is under investigation with Maryland State Police.
