Allen Henry Wilkens, 77, died after a collision in Columbia Monday night, according to Howard County Police.

At about 9:45 p.m. a 1985 Mercedes driven by Wilkens was headed southeast on Robert Fulton Drive when Wilkens attempted to make a left turn onto Commerce Center Drive, according to a statement released by police. His Mercedes collided with a 2008 Toyota 4 Runner that was driving northwest on Robert Fulton Drive, according to the statement.

Wilkens was alone in the car, police said. He was taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma and later died as a result of the collision. Police said the driver of the 4 Runner, 38-year-old Holli Michele Broerman of Pasadena, was also alone in her car; she was taken to Baltimore Washington Medical Center and later released.

Police say the preliminary investigation indicates the collision was caused by Wilkens failing to yield right-of-way to Broerman.
