No Injuries Following Roof Fire at Hammond Elementary School

What was described as a small fire was put out in less than an hour.

Firefighters were quickly able to extinguish a blaze that broke out Thursday afternoon on the roof of Hammond Elementary School in Laurel, according to Jackie Cutler, spokeswoman for the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue.

They were called a little after 12 p.m. to the school, which is located on the 8100 block of Aladdin Drive. Upon arrival, firefighters saw a small fire on the roof and some smoke inside the school, Cutler said.

"It took less than an hour to extinguish the fire and ventilate the building," she said.

The Howard County Public School System is on spring break this week.

There were no injuries reported. The fire remains under investigation, Cutler said.
