Update: Early Morning Collision Kills Columbia Teen, Three Injured

A Columbia teenager was killed in a 3 a.m. collision on Thursday night, alcohol may have been involved.

Update - 2:15 p.m. - A spokesperson for the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center said Obafami Ilupeju is in critical condition and Tres Jones and Dontrell Milner are both in serious condition. All three were passengers in the vehicle when the collision occurred.

Original Story

A Columbia teenager was killed in a 3 a.m. Thursday collision on Columbia Road when the 2003 Audi A6 he was driving left the road and struck a tree, according to police.

Police said alcohol may have been a factor. Police reported three other passengers were in serious condition after the accident.

Shaquan Jamal Curtis, 17, of the 5300 block of Harpers Farm Road in Columbia, was killed due to injuries sustained in the collision, according to police. Obafami Oyeniyi Ilupeju, 21, Tres Quante Jones, 20, and Dontrell Milner, 20, were seriously injured in the collision and brought to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. The addresses of the passengeres were not immediately available Thursday morning, according to police.

Police said excessive speed is believed to be the primary cause of the accident, but they said they are also investigating the possibility that alcohol may have been a factor.

The accident occurred on Columbia Road near Tarkington Place, according to police. Columbia Road was closed to thru traffic until 6:15 a.m. while the investigation and clean-up took place, said police.

Howard County Public Schools reported Curtis was not a student at one of their schools.

My deepest sympathies to all the families. Please share this article with any teenage drivers you know, so that this poor young man's fate may be averted by others who, in their adolescent minds, believe themselves immortal.

Praying for the families affected especially the one who lost his life. Sad that he life was so short.

I wish there was some way to have teens understand they are not immortal nor indestructible. Choices can change (or end) a life in a split second. "I'm sorry" or "I didn't think" can't undo the damage or tragedy of some of these choices. Drinking to excess seems to be an epidemic in Howard county. I am sure it is in other areas too - but this is my "area of reference". It is so sad, and so scary for parents. I wish I had some brilliant solution.

Lisa, You have my sympathies; I cannot imagine how difficult this may be. However, what was he doing out at 3 a.m.? Unless he was coming from or going to work, I'm hard-pressed to figure out why any 17 year old would be out in the middle of the night, let alone a single father who was hopefully growing into a responsible man so that he could raise and provide for his child. Yes, to a certain extent I am judging, but I'm also trying to figure this out because there may be another explanation (again, such as going to/from work). Again, my sympathies to you and your family. This has to be one of the hardest times in your lives. P.S. If you respond, please turn off ALL CAPS. It makes your posts much harder to read. l

Lisa, I am the mother of Dontrell Milner also hurt seriously in this accident. My prayers go out to you and your family. I can't image what you are going through, but remember God will be by your side every step of the way. His daughter will not have her father but your can always tell her about him so she will always remember him. My son is constantly seeing those last minutes with your son and is grieving everyday . .

Valerie, my prayers also go out to your family as well as the 4th young man. This accident in whole was defenitely a tradgedy and will take a while to heal from. Just know that God have our back and he is the only one that will bring us through. All that can be done now is to remain strong for the family and give Shaquan a proper burial. Yes, his daughter will be reminded daily of who her father was because he was an encredible young man with a lot of heart and soul. I wanna thank all Shaquaun friends family and residents of columbia for joining us at his candle light visual and in advance to the ones whom will join us at his funeral Friday. Its such a trajic that this accident has again took the life of another young man. Teens and young adults, please donot.let their death"s be in vain. May bless us all.

They are TEENS, Mari. My mother, God rest her soul, once said to me, " . . . remember, I was young once!" Think back to your own youth and remember we weren't perfect. Please don't judge . . . it's neither here nor there now! And if you must judge, please do so to yourself. This is not the place or time!
