A 26-year-old inmate was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in critical condition after he was assaulted Thursday night at the Maryland Correctional Institution in Jessup, according to state police.

Around 7 p.m. on Thursday, correctional officers were informed by another inmate that a man in the east wing needed assistance, according to state police. Responding correctional officers found Javaughn A. Young, 26, lying in a walkway near the entrance to the wing with severe trauma to his head, said police.

Police said another inmate has been identified as a suspect and charges against him are pending.

Young, formerly of Hagerstown, had previously pleaded guilty to negligent manslaughter for a 2007 crash that resulted in the death of his pregnant girlfriend and was currently appealing a sentence of 10 years he received for second-degree assault and false imprisonment in 2012, according to court records.
