(UPDATED 3/25, 5 p.m.) Infant Dies After Being Run Over in Laurel

Police say a mother and two of her children were hit by their own car after the mother forgot to put it in park.

An infant has died after being run over in the Prince George's County section of Laurel, according to the county police department.

The incident happened shortly before 10 a.m. along the block of 8300 Montpelier Drive, just north of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.

According to police, a 30-year-old female – identified as the child's mother – was dropping off her baby and her older 3-year-old child at a residential home.

But the mother forgot to put the car in park, police said. And then, as the car began to roll backward, the 3-year-old got out and ran behind it.

With the infant in her hands, the mother ran behind the car and tried to save her older child – but the vehicle ended up striking all three of them, police said.

Paramedics from Prince George's Fire/EMS administered CPR on the youngest infant, but the baby was pronounced dead en route to a local hospital, according to police.

Neighbors who witnessed the event described a horrific scene in which the mother was holding what appeared to be a lifeless infant yelling, "Someone please help!"

"I heard this loud scream," said Melvin Smith, who lives across the street from where the collision occurred.  " [I heard,] 'Someone please help. My baby, she's not breathing," he said.

Smith said he performed CPR on the infant for as long as seven minutes before Fire/EMS arrived.

"The baby was not moving," he said.

Neighbor Karen Johnson said she peeked out her window after hearing screaming and saw a woman pacing backward and holding a baby.

"The infant looked lifeless," she said.

Pam Harrison ran from her home to assist the woman and called 911.  She said that when she approached the mother and child, she saw a lot of blood.

The mother and male child were sent to the hospital.  Police could give no update on their status. Neighbors said the 3-year-old boy did not appear to be injured.
