Howard County Says Goodbye to Police Chief William McMahon

The new leader takes the helm on Tuesday.

After eight years, Howard County Police Chief William McMahon is turning over his post June 30 as he retires.

Here's what people had to say about the chief:

"What you will be known for is character, integrity and judgment." Howard County Executive Ken Ulman

"Today, the Howard County Police Department says an official goodbye to a man who has left a lasting mark and true legacy for our agency. Police Chief Bill McMahon retires today after 30 years in law enforcement and eight years as our chief. It has been said that leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others. Chief McMahon has led this organization by example, setting and living by the highest standards with true integrity, compassion and a genuine desire to serve our agency and our community. Thank you, Chief McMahon, for leaving this great agency even better than you found it. Every life you’ve touched in this county is better for being able to call you colleague, leader and friend." Howard County Police Department

"For the past eight years I have worked closely with Chief McMahon. When I first met him, I appreciated the fact that as a father of three teenagers, he was very aware of the risks faced by our youth. When a constituent suggested the Collision Avoidance Training (C.A.T.) program, he worked with me to implement the advance defensive driving program for drivers ages 16-20. Over the last few years the C.A.T. program has trained dozens of young adults to be safer drivers. Chief McMahon is a well-respected leader locally, regionally and nationally for his professionalism, innovative approaches and commitment to public safety. His service to Howard County has made our neighborhoods safer."Howard County Councilwoman Courtney Watson

"You are a true professional, strong leader and one who clearly leads with integrity, pride and community values. I'm going to miss you. The department is going to miss you." Major Gary Gardner (incoming chief)
