Howard County Officer Taken to Shock Trauma After Monday Night Collision

Police said the officer's vehicle was struck from behind during a traffic stop on Interstate 70.

Update - The officer injured in the crash on Interstate 70 Monday night was released from the hospital, according to Howard County Police.

Original Story - Sept. 17

A Howard County police officer was injured while making a routine traffic stop on westbound I-70 Monday night near Marriottsville Road.

Police said officer Neil White pulled over a Ford Focus for a traffic violation around 11:37 p.m. on Monday. During the traffic stop, a 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck struck White's cruiser from behind, pushing the car into the Focus, according to police.

White, 38, was flown from the scene to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center where he is currently in stable condition, police said.

Investigators believe the driver of the truck, Curt Michael Smith, of the 100 block of Courier Ct. in Taneytown, may have fallen asleep before striking White's cruiser.

Neither Smith nor the driver of the Focus, a 47-year-old woman from Wisconsin, were injured in the collision, said police.

White is a 10-year veteran of the Howard County Police Department.
