Gas Main Break Closes Part of Waterloo Road Thursday

The gas leak near Waterloo Elementary closed a portion of Waterloo Road on Thursday.

A gas main was hit by construction workers on Thursday morning causing a portion of Waterloo Road to be closed for over an hour while fire officials and BGE crew worked to fix the break.

The main was struck at about 7:45 a.m. on Waterloo Rd. between Snowden River Parkway and Old Montogomery Road, according to Jackie Cutler, a spokesperson for the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services. The fire department isolated the area, determined there was no threat and did not evacuate any of the nearby areas, said Cutler.

BGE, which maintains the gas line, responded to the scene and repaired the main in about an hour, according to Cutler.

The road was closed for about an hour and a half, but was reopened around 9 a.m.

Due to the break's close proximity to Waterloo Elementary School firefighters took readings both inside and outside the school, but the area was deemed safe, Cutler said.

Waterloo Elementary School will continue its normal operations today.
