Flat Tires Thwart Bicycle Burglary in Columbia: Howard County Crime Reports

All information provided by the Howard County Police Department for crimes reported July 27 - August 1.

Columbia

Residential burglary

A woman doing housework inside her home had left her garage door open in the 6400 block of Red Keel around 11:30 a.m. on July 30. Someone stole a bicycle from the garage, but it was abandoned at the end of the driveway because it had two flat tires.

School property damage

The window to a trailer classroom at West Running Brook Elementary School was broken, but no entry appeared to have been made sometime in July.

Robbery

A woman reported she was robbed by a younger man and an elderly man at Dobbin Center after the younger man forced her to withdraw money from a nearby bank on July 30. Read more in this Columbia Patch article.

Bike burglary

A neighbor in the 6300 block of Windharp Way saw four teens enter a nearby garage, steal a bicycle and then flee. The neighbor attempted to chase the teens, but they managed to escape near Steven's Forest Swimming Pool around 6:45 p.m. on July 29.

Catburglary attempt

A man getting out of his shower at a residence in the 6400 block of River Run spotted an unknown man inside his home, near the front door. When the unknown man saw the resident he fled out the rear slider. Nothing was found missing in the incident, which happened on July 29 around 7:10 p.m.

Residential booze burglary

A neighbor watched as four teens removed a screen from a window at a residence in the 6500 block of Kilkenny Court around 7:15 p.m. on July 29. The teens entered the home, but the neighbor thought one of them may live there. Later it was found that three bottles of win and a 6-pack of beer were taken from the residence. The teens left in a black older model four-door vehicle.

Residential break-in

A woman watching television heard an unusual sound, which she thought was her cat, but after investigating she saw someone enter her bedroom. She left the home in the 10100 block of Pasture Gate Lane and locked the door. The person left the house before police arrived around noon on July 31.

Residential break-in

Someone shattered a rear basement window of a residence in the 8500 block of Black Star Circle sometime between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on July 31, but nothing was taken. Police reported this may have been related to suspects fleeing police after smash and grabs at Centennial Park.

Woodstock

Commercial burglary

Two men kicked in the front door of the snowball stand at the corner of Old Frederick Road and Woodstock Road and proceeded to ransack the business around 3 a.m. on July 30. The men stole cash from two cash registers and used bolt cutters to break a pad lock on the front window. Police described the two suspects as follows:

  • Suspect 1: A white male, wearing blue jeans, a light colored short-sleeve shirt, a black hat, with a bandanna around his neck.
  • Suspect 2: A white male, wearing blue jeans, a gray hoodie, who had black hair with a buzz cut.

North Laurel

Residential burglary

Someone entered a screened-in porch and stole a pair of binoculars sometime on July 10 in the 10800 block of Harding Road.

Savage

Residential burglary

A bicycle, golf clubs and bicycle shoes were stolen from an unsecured garage in the 9300 block of Kendal Circle sometime between July 27 and 28.

Ellicott City

Students explore unlocked school

A police officer arrived at Northfield Elementary School around 9:40 p.m. on July 29 to find a vehicle exiting the parking lot. The officer stopped the vehicle and spoke to the driver. The driver said him and two other teen boys who were with him were hanging outside the school, pulling on doors, when they discovered one was left open. The three teens entered the school, walked to the gymnasium and then left. Officers determined there was no theft or damage done at the school and the teens were released to their parents.

Property damage

A rear slider was shattered in the 3200 block of Halcyon Court around 5 p.m. on July 31.

Countywide vehicle thefts/ attempts

A blue/ white Yamaha motorcycle was reported stolen in the 9500 block of Sea Shadow on July 3.

A yellow box truck was reported stolen in the 6600 block of Amberton Drive on July 29 around 8 a.m.

A 2000 red International Eagle was reported stolen in the 8200 block of Dorsey Run Road on July 29 around 12:50 p.m.
