Driver Killed After Vehicle Went Over I-95 Bridge: Officials

The crash occurred near the Baltimore, Howard County line.

A crash on Interstate 95 Monday morning killed the driver of a truck and created major backups for travelers headed south.

Transportation officials said there were two vehicles involved in the crash on I-95 south in Howard County prior to the exit for I-895. The crash occurred at 11:45 a.m.

One vehicle went over the I-95 bridge and caught fire, according to Baltimore County public safety officials.

First responders put the fire out immediately but the driver of the pickup truck was dead on arrival, according to the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services, which said the incident occurred near River Road.

While the truck went over the bridge, the trailer came to rest on the highway across the two right lanes, WJZ reported.

Maryland State Police was investigating the crash at the Patapsco River Bridge. Preliminary investigation indicated that the 2005 Ford pickup was hauling a trailer on I-95 south when the two separated, the truck hit the side of the bridge, traveled over the embankment and fell near Patapsco Valley State Park below, The Baltimore Sun reported.

Lane closures were in effect on I-95 south for more than five hours.

"Avoid this area," Baltimore County officials advised. "Extended delays [are] expected."

State Highway Administration personnel made repairs to the bridge and inspected it, according to WJZ. By 5:30 p.m., all lanes had reopened.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and the driver's identity was being withheld pending next of kin notification, The Baltimore Sun reported.

Anyone with information may contact the Maryland State Police Golden Ring Barracks at 410-780-2700.
