County Police Officer Injured in Columbia Crash

The officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

A Howard County Police officer hurt in a two-vehicle collision Wednesday evening in Columbia was taken to Howard County General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to a police department news release.

The crash happened at about 5:56 p.m. at the intersection of Freetown Road and Quarterstaff Road in Hickory Ridge. The officer, Christopher Calcaterra, 26, was driving a marked police vehicle west on Freetown Road when his vehicle was struck by a 2003 Honda Odyssey at an intersection, police said.

The Honda had been driving south on Quarterstaff Road when it entered the intersection; a preliminary investigation found that the driver of the Honda did not stop at a stop sign before entering the intersection, police said.

Calcaterra, who was briefly trapped in his vehicle following the crash, was on routine patrol and was not responding to an emergency at the time, police said.

The Honda's driver was a 17-year-old female whose name police have not yet released. She had two passengers: an 8-year-old girl and a 6-year-old girl. None of them needed to be taken to the hospital, police said.
