Columbia Woman Gets Jail Time for Hitting Boyfriend with Car

She must serve weekends in jail and enroll in abuser intervention program.

A Howard County judge has sentenced a Columbia woman to a year in jail for hitting her boyfriend with her car in an Elkridge motel parking lot. 

After a quarrel with her boyfriend on Feb. 23, 2011, Sharon Yvette Jones, 48, tried to run him over outside the  in Elkridge with her Cadillac, according to charging documents.

The man was taken to Howard County General Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries to his elbow, wrist, shin and calf, said the report.

Jones, who lives in Columbia, was charged with first and second-degree assault and leaving the scene after an accident, according to court records.

According to the report, the victim walked toward Jones’ car in the parking lot of the Econo Lodge when she drove in his direction and “struck him with the front of her vehicle.” As a result, he “landed on the hood, continued over the windshield…the roof…[and] trunk of the Cadillac before landing on the asphalt parking lot,” said the report.

The judge sentenced Jones to one year of jail time, to be served on weekends starting July 16. She was also ordered to complete a rehabilitative program for abusive individuals.

Serving on weekends enables the defendant to be a “productive member of society by continuing in their jobs, paying taxes, etc.,” said T. Wayne Kirwan, spokesman for the Howard County State’s Attorney’s Office.

When Jones is not serving her sentence on weekends, she must complete the New Behaviors program offered through the Domestic Violence Center of Howard County and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
