Howard County police have increased patrols in certain neighborhoods, but they are also asking residents to help out.

"Be aware of suspicious people or vehicles in their neighborhoods and report any unusual activity by calling 911," police said. "It is helpful to note the make, model and tag number of any suspicious vehicles."

And anyone with information can also call the anonymous tip line at 410-313-STOP, police said.

Police also provided several tips to help keep from having your home broken into:

  • Always keep all doors, including the garage door, closed and locked. Ensure that the door leading from the garage to the interior of the home is also locked.
  • Always lock your vehicles, and remove valuable property. A garage door opener in an unlocked car is like a key to your home.
  • Use quality locks, including deadbolts and Charlie bars.
  • Keep lamps or lights and a radio on when you’re out so your home appears occupied.
  • Don’t advertise when you will be on vacation. Arrange for a neighbor to collect your mail and newspapers.
  • Keep a list of the serial numbers of your valuables, such as televisions, cameras and computers. In the event a burglar does steal these items, this information can help police return your property to you.
