Baby Boy Born on Route 100 With Help of Police Dispatcher

A husband and wife welcomed their third child Tuesday morning, a baby boy who was born on Route 100 in Howard County while the couple was on their way to Anne Arundel County Medical Center.

Howard County Police Dispatcher Meghan Blizard received the 911 call from the father at 9:02 a.m. He told Blizard his 38-year-old wife was in labor and that he had pulled over to the side of the road on Route 100 just before I-95. He said the baby was coming.

"It was their third child, so he was pretty calm," said Blizard.

Over the next three minutes, Blizard helped coach the father through the delivery process.

Then at 9:05 a.m., "He told me, 'He's out, he's out'," said Blizard. "He advised me the baby was fully out. You could kind of hear the baby crying. That was a pretty cool experience."

Afterwards, firefighters and paramedics arrived on the scene to help cut the umbilical cord and then transport the family to Anne Arundel Medical Center, according to police.

Blizard, who has been with the force for four years, said, "It was a great way to start the morning."

"I have been on maternity dispatch calls before but this is the first time where they actually had the delivery while I was on the call," said Blizard in a statement. "It was very exciting. It's not something that happens every day."

A police spokesperson said Tuesday that she didn't know if the parents would be available to talk to media.
